ach August, the quiet village of Marpissa transforms into a living museum. Narrow alleys become stages, courtyards turn into exhibition spaces, and time seems to fold between the past and the present. This is Routes in Marpissa, a three-day cultural festival that feels less like an event and more like a journey.Set in one of Paros’ oldest settlements, the festival invites visitors to walk the village and discover moments of art, memory and local identity. Each route follows a different narrative, often blending architecture, oral histories, installations, music, and interactive performance. Along the way, one encounters traditional homes, handmade maps, projections on whitewashed walls, and the sounds of violins or whispered stories rising from shaded corners.
What makes the festival special is its atmosphere. There’s no rush, no central square or main stage. The village itself is the canvas. Families wander slowly, volunteers guide gently, and every turn holds a quiet surprise. Artists and locals work together to highlight the uniqueness of Cycladic life, not as folklore, but as something present, vibrant and proud.
The village itself is the canvas
Routes in Marpissa is organised entirely by dedicated volunteers, often lifelong residents and cultural professionals including architects, musicians, educators, and local historians. More than 130 volunteers come together each year to design thematic “stations” in private homes, courtyards, chapels, and hidden alleys, marking each route with thoughtful signage and audio–visual material that engages both children and adults through creativity and play
Each edition also centres on a distinct theme that anchors its artistic narrative. For example, the 2024 festival, celebrating its 14th year, was curated under the theme “Elements Unbroken,” prompting artists to reflect on natural heritage, Cycladic identity, and Paros’ marble legacy through site-specific installations and performances
For travelers interested in the cultural side of Paros, this is a rare opportunity to witness not just the beauty of the island, but the way it remembers, preserves, and reimagines itself.
